Lesson 11

God is Judge

Definition:

God as judge indicates His authority and right to punish people for not living according to the standards of His expected behavior. In the Old Testament He delivered His people from their enemies as long as the Israelites were obeying Him. However, when they disobeyed He allowed other nations to conquer Israel as punishment for disobeying. In the New Testament there are several references to the Final Days when God will judge all men.

Meaning:

Since God is judge and since God knows everything we do there is no way He can be unjust in His judgement. As long as we have accepted Christ as our Lord and Saviour and are living our lives in a way that we are serving Him, Christ's shed blood will in God's eyes be seen as atoning for all of our sins.

Scripture Support:

Job 31:13-15
If I did despise the cause of my manservant or of my maidservant, when they contended with me; What then shall I do when God riseth up? and when he visiteth, what shall I answer him? Did not he that made me in the womb make him? and did not one fashion us in the womb?

Psalm 9:7
But the Lord shall endure for ever: He hath prepared his throne for judgement.

Psalm 50:3-6
Our God shall come, and shall not keep silence: a fire shall devour before him, and it shall be very tempestuous round about him. He shall call to the heavens from above, and to the earth, that he may judge his people. Gather my saints together unto me; those that have made a covenant with me by sacrifice. And the heavens shall declare his righteousness: for God is judge himself.

Psalm 96:13
The Lord: for he cometh, for he cometh to judge the earth: he shall judge the world with righteousness, and the people with his truth.

Ecclesiastes 3:17
I said in mine heart, God shall judge the righteous and the wicked: for there is a time there for every purpose and for every work.

Ecclesiastes 11:9
Rejoice, O young man, in they youth; and let thy heart cheer thee in the days of thy youth, and walk in the ways of thine heart. and in the sight of thine eyes: but know thou, that for all these things God will bring thee into judgment.

Luke 12:2-5
For there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; neither hid, that shall not be known. Therefore whatsoever ye have spoken in darkness shall be heard in the light; and that which ye have spoken in the ear in closets shall be proclaimed upon the housetops. And I say unto you my friends, Be not afraid of them that kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do. But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him.

Acts 10:42
And he commanded us to preach unto the people, and to testify that it is he which was ordained of God to be the Judge of quick and dead.

II Peter 2:4-9
For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgement: And spared not the old world, but saved Noah the eighth person, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood upon the world of the ungodly; And turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrha into ashes condemned them with an overthrow, making them an example unto those that after should live ungodly; And delivered just Lot, vexed with the filthy conversation of the wicked: (For that righteous man dwelling among them, in seeing and hearing vexed his righteous soul from day to day with their unlawful deeds;) The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgement to be punished.

Revelation 20:11-15
I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them. And I say the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

Conclusion:

God has standards for our behavior and He will one day judge us according to those standards. Those who believe in Jesus' death on the cross will escape His judgment. Those who don't will be judged and punished.

Application:

Though I believe in Jesus that doesn't take away from me my responsibility to live according to God's standards. Nor does it relieve me of my duty to tell others about the saving blood of Christ. Therefore, I will live according to God's rules and tell others about God's love demonstrated to them through Jesus' death and resurrection.
