Lesson
10
God
is Sovereign
Definition:
God is the supreme authority. He is not
subject to any power or law which could be conceived as superior to or other than Himself.
Sovereign refers to a king who has authority over a certain land or group of people. God's
sovereignty is over all the earth and all creation, as He created all things.
Meaning:
If God is in control man has no right to take
matters into his own hand. Even if he does, God knew ahead of time he was going to do it.
Though man may question God's authority and even His existence when things are going bad,
God is still in control, knows what will take place, and is bringing glory to Himself.
Scripture Support:
Isaiah 45:9
Woe unto Him that striveth with his Maker! Let the potsherd strive with
the potsherds of the earth. Shall the clay say to him that fashioneth it, What makest
thou? or thy work, He hath no hands?
Daniel 4:28-37
All this came upon the king Nebuchadnezzar. At the end of twelve months he
walked in the place of the kingdom of Babylon. The king spake, and said, Is not this great
Babylon, that I have built for the house of the kingdom by the might of my power, and for
the honour of my majesty? While the word was in the king's mouth, there fell a voice from
heaven, saying, I king Nebuchadnezzar, to thee it is spoken; The kingdom is departed from
thee. And they shall drive thee from men, and thy dwelling place shall be with the beasts
of the field: they shall make thee to eat grass as oxen, and seven times shall pass over
thee, until thou know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to
whomsoever He will. The same hour was the thing fulfilled upon Nebuchadnezzar: and he was
driven from men, and did eat grass as oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven,
till his hairs were grown like eagles feathers. and his nails like birds' claws. And at
the end of the days I Nebuchadnezzar lifted up mine eyes unto heaven, and mine
understanding returned unto me, and I blessed the most High, and I praised and honoured
Him that liveth forever, whose dominion is an everlasting dominion, and His kingdom is
from generation to generation: And all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as
nothing: and He doeth according to His will in the army of heaven, and among the
inhabitants of the earth: and none can stay his hand, or say unto Him, What doest thou? At
the same time my reason returned unto me; and for the glory of my kingdom, mine honour and
brightness returned unto me; and my counsellors and my lords sought unto me; and I was
established in my kingdom, and excellent majesty was added unto me. Now I Nebuchadnezzar
praise and extol and honor the King of heaven, all whose works are truth, and His ways
judgment: and those that walk in pride He is able to abase.
Romans 9:20,21
Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing
formed say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus? Hath not the potter power
over the clay; of the same lump to make one vessel unto honour, and another unto
dishonour?
Revelation 19:16
And he hath on His vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS,
AND LORD OF LORDS.
Conclusion:
God has every right to deal with man however He
wants, because He created man in the first place. Since He created mankind and everything
else, He alone is worthy to rule and decide what will take place. Only He can say what
will happen to the believer and to those who don't believe.
Application:
When it seems to me that bad things are happening to
me I will not turn from God nor ask God why, but seek to know the good that God is trying
to teach me through the hard and testing times that I am going through.
